Protesters called for the creation of a European migrant sea rescue programme as they marched in Berlin on Saturday.

The demonstration was organised under the slogan, 'sea rescue is non negotiable,' and was just one in a nationwide series, which saw thousands of protesters take to the streets in different German cities.

Organisers stated online that the aim of the protests was to bring more attention to the issue in the build-up to Germany's federal election in September. They also outlined their goals: the release of all civilian rescue ships, stopping all migrant pushbacks, establishing a European sea rescue initiative, and the creation of legal and safe refugee routes to Europe.
