Riders Republic Gameplay and Impressions | Fun And Annoying, But Mostly Fun
Published at : August 31, 2021
Remember Steep? Well, Riders Republic is basically the sequel to that. However, as you can see in this Riders Republic gameplay, it's a bit more random and eccentric. But, if you look past the annoying script and characters that all feel a bit Steve Buscemi in 30 Rock, it's quite a bit of fun. Watch this video to hear deputy editor Alice Bell chat to Colm about his Riders Republic impressions after over four hours of playtime with an early build.

So, yeah, as this Riders Republic game play shows, this game sometimes gets a little too outlandish for its own good. But, as Colm says, maybe some people will go for it. But, he certainly didn't. There's no question that some people will love going into the Riders Republic customization and sticking on a panda head or a giraffe suit to look like a London Marathon also-ran. If that's you, you might be delighted by the tone and more luck to you.
As outlined in this Riders Republic preview, Colm enjoyed the actual racing and tricks battles an awful lot more than the faff. Ubisoft Annecy introduces a few new sports in this one; Colm didn't get to play every single one, but he did get to mess about with the bike, the Iron Man suit-thing, and the snow sports that featured in Steep. Riders Of Republic is really good fun when it focuses on the events. And there seems to be an awful lot of variety in them, too.
But, one thing is clear from a few hours of play: this game is all about playing with friends. Whether you're playing against your pals, or with them in a team-based event, Riders Republic multiplayer is the way to go. For those that want to play nice with their mates, you've got the Tricks Battle events - the one Colm played reminded him of Graffiti from Tony Hawk. But the one event that Ubisoft seem to be pushing is the Riders Republic mass race. These 50+ person, multi-stage races are utterly ludicrous in the best way possible.
This isn't our Rider Republic review, obviously - our Riders Republic PC review (which will fill the gap for those looking for a Riders Republic Xbox review or a Riders Republic PS5 review, of course) will be coming much closer to launch.
