In this week’s episode of Ask Monica, RMA of Connecticut Nurse Practitioner and health coach Monica Moore answers the question “What's the best exercise for insulin resistance?”
Monica explains that many people with PCOS also experience insulin resistance. This insulin resistance can lead to impaired glucose tolerance and a host of other metabolic effects.
So what’s the best type of exercise for people with insulin resistance and PCOS?
Here are Monica’s suggestions:
1. Pick a movement practice that you enjoy - it should feel fun and sustainable
2. Be mindful that HIIT workouts are great for burning calories, but when you are insulin resistant it can make you very hungry afterward, meaning it’s not the ideal workout
3. Try Zone 2 Training: a moderate-level workout for a longer period of time
4. Feel free to mix it up, you do not have to stick to the same form of exercise all the time
5. Ask yourself: how do I want to move today?
And remember these wise words from Monica: “Don’t think you need to have a formal exercise practice. You need to have a movement practice!”
