Prof. Dr. Shahid Baig is the chairman of the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF). He has taught in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He has served as a visiting research professor in Denmark, Germany and Sweden. He has been declared one of the most productive scientists in Pakistan.
Born in Rawalpindi on October 9, 1960, he earned his doctoral degree in human molecular genetics at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. He conducted some of his doctoral research at Bosphorus University in Istanbul. He has been awarded the Sitar-i-Imtiaz (the Star of Distinction).
According to him, 3,000 PhDs are jobless in Pakistan. In collaboration with the federal government, the Higher Education Commission has established 26 centers, which includes, Centers of Excellence (12), Pakistan Study Centers (6), Area Study Centers (6) and Institutes of Clinical Psychology (2).
The centers are woefully underfunded. They are finding it hard to pay salaries. Instead of hiring regular faculty, universities are relying more and more on visiting faculty. The highest number of genetically diseased children are born in Pakistan.
Located just a stone's throw from the Prime Minister's Secretariat, the PSF is the apex body for promotion and funding of scientific and technological research and science popularization in the country. The PSF has two subsidiary organizations, i.e. Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) and Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Center (PASTIC).
