Specialize in medium-heavy efficient or decayed armour! (Battle Brothers modded medium armour perks)
Published at : October 31, 2021
An example of two medium-heavy armour perks, each co-existing with the other and with all the standard armour perks in the game, without seeming especially OP in any combinations.
The first example (Made of Metal) rewards armours with an efficient ratio of durability versus fatigue: 35 free fatigue is permitted before penalties, and there is also a penalty (a steeper one) based on 10% of the amount of total armour durability below 400 (this prevents too much synergy with light Nimble armours). The effect of Made of Metal is to reduce damage ignoring armour (by a max of 67%) and to increase the threshold for receiving injuries (by the same max amount). It is likely that optimal Nimble or Battle-Forged characters would take fractionally more hits from many/most enemies in the game (especially, e.g., ancient dead and orc warriors), because a reduction in direct/ignore damage is (by its very nature) only active while armour remains. However, with the addition of an increased injury threshold, this medium perk confers the greatest resistance to injury (and to the most debilitating injury effects), so that a character "Made of Metal" would be more likely than any other to remain in optimal fighting condition right up until the final blow.
The second example (Decayed) "rewards" inefficient armours, mostly ancient/decayed/barbarian ones, and is intended to be a double-edged sword, with the greatest bonuses also putting the character at the greatest risk. To be "Decayed", a character must have at least 39 fatigue from armour, and will become more decayed with more fatigue and less decayed with penalties based on armour durability (these penalties can't be avoided, since there is one for armour above 349 and another for armour below 350). The net effect of these rewards and penalties is that "Decayed" status can only be achieved when wearing at least one highly inefficient ancient/decayed/barbarian piece of armour, and when not optimally geared for taking advantage of any other armour perk. When "Decayed" status is active, the character is immune to injuries and has hitpoints regenerated (in proportion both to the amount of loss and the amount of "decay"), but hitpoints are also lowered in proportion to the amount of "decay", leaving a highly "Decayed" character at risk of rapid death before being able to regenerate. The other effect of "Decayed" status is that resolve for combat-related morale checks (i.e. non-spooking ones) is greatly strengthened (i.e. by 50 plus some extra based on the amount of "decay").
