MASTV: Japan staged a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour 80 years ago today, which triggered the Pacific War. Do you have anything to say on this occasion?

Zhao Lijian: Today is a commemorative day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during WWII and the outbreak of the Pacific War. The war of aggression launched by Japanese militarism has inflicted untold sufferings on the people of the victimized countries in Asia, and left them with indelible painful memories. Over the past decades, the international community has been watching whether Japan will show a sincere and correct understanding of that history. Several decades on, Japan still owes an explicit explanation to its Asian neighbors, including China. Several decades on, some in Japan are still denying and even beautifying the history of aggression and colonial rule. Recently, certain Japanese politician went so far as to claim that “a Taiwan emergency is a Japanese emergency”. Today, nearly a hundred Japanese lawmakers paid a high-profile visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, where convicted WWII class-A war criminals are honored. Rather than learning historical lessons, they only seek to revive the specter of militarism.

History cannot be denied and travesty of justice cannot be tolerated. China firmly opposes any wrong act to backpedal, upholds international fairness and justice, safeguards world peace and stability, and maintains the UN-centered international system and the international order based on international law. The Japanese side should adopt a right attitude, deeply reflect upon the Japanese militarism’ Fascist atrocities and crimes against humanity and win trust from people around the world with concrete actions.
