Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton has called out the journalists and politicians he says are engaging in the “censorship of ideas” by trying to cancel Warringah Liberal candidate Katherine Deves.

Ms Deves has attracted widespread criticism for past comments she made about transgender people.

“The language used by Deves was heated and aggressive which is why she's apologised for those specific comments,” Mr Houghton said.

“But some in the media think that these issues should not be discussed at all."

Mr Houghton said the journalists at the ABC and The Guardian who are trying to “bury” Ms Deves for the comments which they don’t like, are “completely out of line”.

“And shame on the politicians from a party supposedly in favour of the freedom of speech and debate calling to delete this person from public life before she's even elected,” he said. Politicians and journalists engaging in ‘censorship of ideas’ over trans athlete debate
