The war in Ukraine and a ban on palm oil exports by Indonesia have sent price shocks across Asia, as typically cheap comfort foods start costing consumers more. In South Korea, fried chicken prices are on the rise after Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil, banned exports to control domestic prices. In Japan, soba noodles, a cheap and popular meal, have been hit by reduced exports from Russia, the world’s top producer of buckwheat.
