Catholic Organizations Across the US Step in to Help Afghan Refugees | EWTN News Nightly

The US says more than 100,000 people have been safely evacuated from Kabul. It is unclear how many Afghan refugees will be resettled in America, but Catholic organizations aren't waiting to find out. They are preparing to help those in need. Judi Harris, the Director of Refugee Services at Saint Vincent Catholic Charities in Lansing, Michigan estimates around 200 Afghans may be coming to her region over the next 6 months. Harris says, "This is about welcoming people who are in danger, the dignity of life, and saving lives, that's what this organization is all about." Catholic Charities in Dallas is asking for donations for apartment set ups, volunteers to help mentor and interpreters. Stephen Carattini, the Director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia says essential items for resettled families came flooding in as soon as the word got out. Carattini says they've received, "Bed frames, linens, towels, utensils, pots and pans... All of a sudden we had UPS truck after UPS truck pulling up at our facilities." Earlier this month, the USCCB responded to the developing crisis in Afghanistan and made a commitment to help evacuees as well. Correspondent, Mark Irons reports
