It also allows you to synchronize your settings across devices. You can use this to purchase apps and movies from the Microsoft Store.
As an example, You can't also download free apps from the App Store if they have an age rating that necessitates verification. Because of the variety of content available, this includes apps such as Netflix and Spotify.
